Farming 480 hectares in West Norfolk and managing a further 150 hectares in the Fens near Ouse washes, Michael Rae’s arable-focused farm prioritizes irrigated crops. Navigating diverse soil types within fields poses challenges, but he proudly oversees two Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSIs). Employing agri-environmental schemes, he has created substantial buffer zones, connecting varied habitats through beetle banks, hedgerows, species-rich margins, and pollen strips.
Enhancing biodiversity, Michael has revitalized 12 ponds and established three new ones. Despite his commitment to environmental stewardship, his core mission remains running a commercially viable farming business, embodying a delicate balance between ecological responsibility and economic sustainability.
