What is our involvement in the Deer Management Sector?

In May 2024 a deer management workshop was held by the Broads Authority, Norfolk FWAG and the Forestry Commission to discuss the growing deer population in the Norfolk Broads. This meeting highlighted the necessity for a more effective and coordinated approach to deer management within the Broads. Because of this Norfolk FWAG put in a Farming in Protected Landscapes application for funding towards three mitigating factors within the Norfolk Broads deer management sector. This application was successful, and FWAG are busy working on the creation of a culling dashboard, a subsidised training programme for deer managers and a supply chain contact list for the wild venison market in Norfolk.

 Culling Dashboard:

One key aspect of this project is the development of a user-friendly culling dashboard. This tool enables deer managers to log their culling records and work together with neighbouring properties, leading to more consistent population control. By integrating data from drone surveys, the dashboard ensures more accurate and ethical culling, while also supporting applications for night licenses and closed season culls.

Subsidised Training:

We are also committed to the ethical management of deer populations through training initiatives ensuring recognised best practice. We are partnering with local and national training providers to deliver courses, such as DSC1, Wild Game Meat Hygiene and other more advanced deer management training. DSC2 witnessing is also available through DMQ approved witnesses (AW’s) in Norfolk. Best practice events will offer Norfolk specific elements tailored to relevant species, habitat and terrain. This training will ensure that culls are conducted legally, and that venison enters the human food chain safely and hygienically, and has full traceability. The mentoring of new deer managers is also being built into our long-term strategy.

Supply Chain Mapping:

Lastly, we’re facilitating the growth of local networks through a Supply Chain Contact List. This resource connects deer managers, landowners, and game dealers, creating new commercial opportunities and ensuring that venison can be processed and sold without hindrance. By enabling these connections, we’re helping to meet culling targets and preserve the local ecosystem.

Through these efforts, we’re helping to make deer management more effective, ethical, and sustainable. If you are interested in learning more about our deer management work, or are interested in obtaining ethically sourced venison, please contact advice@norfolkfwag.co.uk

Peatland restoration, Chestnut Farm

Peatlands in the broads: Healthy peatlands are a haven for wildlife, they store carbon in their soils as well as cleaning and storing water in the landscape. The Broads contains a significant amount of England’s lowland peatlands, however approximately one quarter of them are drained for agriculture. When peat is
