Habitat and Species Surveys

About this service

Habitat and species surveys

To evaluate the risks and impacts on species on your farmland, Species Surveys may be conducted. A survey such as this allows Norfolk farmers and landowners to better understand the species and habitats present.

It can also positively contribute to a farm’s ecosystem as well as track conservation progress.

What people say about Norfolk FWAG

Roydon Hall Farms LtdMichael Rae
Marta of Norfolk FWAG successfully and efficiently acquired for Roydon Hall Farms Limited a forestry felling (thinning) license. This involved dealing with the complexities of the forestry commissions processes for about 10 Woodland blocks ranging in size from one hectare to 15 ha. This was achieved by Marta having a thorough knowledge of the processes involved in dealing with the forestry commission and an understanding of what we were trying to achieve.

Norfolk FWAG have been extremely helpful in helping the West Norfolk Nature Network build its Landscape Recovery application. From assisting with LandApp mapping through to proof reading and provision of much needed capacity during the enrollment phase, the team have been great.
Mouche LtdKirsty Alston
I really could not have done this without the incredible knowledge and support and availability and willingness from FWAG’S Henry and Charlie. They were so helpful. The phone advice really was so appreciated to gain insight and help us move to the next stages. And we finally and proudly have a farm that is giving back to wildlife. I hope and endeavour to grow the possibilities for wildlife on our farm with the continued help and advice from FWAG. Thanks no end.

Invasive non-native species are one of the top 5 drivers of global biodiversity loss and are estimated to cost the UK economy up to £2 billion annually. Over 2000 species have been introduced to the UK; these are known as non-native species. Not of these are harmful, however, around 10-15% have become invasive non-native species, […]

In the 1990s, Norfolk established Roadside Nature Reserves (RNRs) to protect and enhance diverse plant communities along our waysides. These RNRs hold some of the last remnants of Norfolk’s natural grasslands, that would have been widespread prior to agricultural intensification from the 1940’s onwards. They have preserved unique assemblages of plants including nationally scarce species […]

In 2011, Norfolk FWAG conducted research to identify areas where our rarer arable plants still occur in Norfolk. The report provided an understanding to assist in targeting environmental stewardship options and other initiatives that will benefit them. The arable flora is now one of the most threatened group of plants in Britain. Modern agricultural techniques […]

In 2023, Norfolk FWAG (Farming and Wildlife Advisory Group) and Pastures & Habitats Limited worked together to design and implement an ambitious Countryside Stewardship Higher Tier Scheme. The aim was to enhance and manage approximately 150 hectares of permanent grassland on the Halvergate marshes for the benefit of breeding waders and wintering waders and wildfowl. The […]

Farmland birds provide important ecosystem services and are excellent indicators of overall ecosystem health. Many farmland birds have experienced steep decline since the 1970s in response to rapid changes in farming practices, urbanisation, and climate change. The worst affected are those that are heavily reliant of farmland habitats for nesting and food, known as ‘specialists’. These include species such as yellowhammer, turtle dove, grey partridge, and skylark. ‘Generalist’ species such as woodpigeon, wren and jackdaw, are […]
